Active Design Guidelines 2.0

Active Design Guidelines 2.0: Designing for Health and Equity (ADG 2.0) is a playbook and toolkit to equitably improve the health of New Yorkers through the design of the city’s built environment. The guidelines focus on the buildings, streets and neighborhoods where we live, work and play—and the significant impact these spaces have on our daily lives.

An update to the original Active Design Guidelines (2010), ADG 2.0 provides a more holistic lens to the design of the built environment and its impact on health. ADG 2.0 includes strategies that promote physical and mental health, social cohesion, climate resilience, safety and civic life. The update puts health equity at the core of all guidelines and focuses on accessibility, quality and authentic community engagement.

ADG 2.0 provides architects, design professionals, planners, and policy makers with updated guidelines for creating healthier streets, neighborhoods, and buildings. The guidelines address the full life cycle of building and public space projects and illuminate the importance of a collaborative design process that meaningfully engages with community members.
