Have a working smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector.
Change batteries in these detectors twice a year – at the start and end of daylight savings time.
No heat or hot water?
Tell your manager/landlord. Call 311 if the problem is not fixed right away.

Keep your baby safe.
Put your baby to sleep alone in a crib or bassinet wearing warm layers.
Do not cover your baby with a blanket above chest level, keeping it away from their face.
Never use a stove or oven to heat your home. Kerosene or propane space heaters are not allowed in NYC.
If you use an electric space-heater:
Plug it directly into a wall outlet.
Place it away from flammable items.
Don’t hang clothes over it.
Be a Buddy. Check that family, friends and neighbors have heat.
In an emergency, people who live nearby can respond faster than anyone else.
Call 311 to report a homeless person in need of shelter.
Prevent hypothermia.
Dress in dry, loose-fitting layers.
Cover exposed skin, such as the face and hands.
Watch for signs of hypothermia, such as intense shivering, dizziness and confusion. Call 911 if you or someone else has these symptoms.
Be careful when shoveling snow.
Shovel slowly and take frequent breaks.
If you are an older adult or have a disability, call 311 and ask if volunteer snow removal services are available in your area.
Avoid slips and falls.
Wear sturdy shoes or boots.
Take short steps and walk slowly.
Use handrails on stairs.
Keep your pets safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as possible.
Wipe your dog’s paws after walks.
Clean up antifreeze spills.
Be car-smart.
Never run your car inside a garage.
Clear snow and ice from your car’s tailpipe.
Avoid driving in dangerous weather.
Keep a shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, blankets and a first-aid kit in your car.
